Save the Dreamland Theater!

100_0154.JPGThe Dreamland Theater, a building built as earlyas 1833 and moved to the site at the turn of the century, has been a working theater for over 90 years. The upper floors was a ballroom and meeting space for the "Red Mens" organization. The Dreamland is an icon on Nantucket.

The new developers, however well meaning, are using the "Nantucket way" to gut out the inside of the building. They have not used any preservation techniques, are not interested in re-designing the plan to accommodate historic interior elements, nor are interested in using the federal tax credit to save money. The HDC and Planning Board have both passed their portions of this project. There is no protections for the interiors of historic buildings on Nantucket and this is just another building suffering the same fate.

Please help us stop this wanton destruction of historic buildings. Together we can convince the developers to consider better historic preservation practices to save the interior and some of the historic exterior.
